PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 6 Rutgers field hockey (8-2, 1-1) was edged by No. 1 Iowa (11-0, 3-0) in a tightly contested 2-1 game on Friday afternoon.Â
Cutting into a 2-0 margin, senior
Kerrie Burns recorded a goal in the 46th minute to make it one-score game. Overall, the Scarlet Knights pushed the
Hawkeyes to the brink, leading in shots, 9-5, and corners, 5-2.
It marked the fourth goal of the season for Burns, while senior
Gianna Mancini picked up her first assist of the season. Defensively, RU held UI to zero shots in the third quarter and just one in the fourth.
Though Rutgers posted the lone shot in a scoreless first quarter, Iowa posted two goals in the second to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Rutgers strung together three straight corners. However, the Hawkeyes managed to maintain their edge.
Moving into the fourth frame, the Scarlet Knights kept the pressure on. Romano sent a long pass into the the circle, where Mancini touched a pass to Burns, who sent in the score from the top of the circle for RU to set the margin at 2-1 with a little over 10 minutes to play.

With the goal, Rutgers snapped a streak of eight consecutive shutouts for Iowa, posting only the fifth goal allowed by the Hawkeyes on the year. The Scarlet Knights are one of only three programs to hold Iowa to two goals or less in a game this year.Â
RU has matched up with nine ranked teams this season, defeating seven -Â No. 12 Duke, No. 6 UConn, No. 16 Syracuse, No. 20 Monmouth, No. 22 Delaware, No. 3 Northwestern and No. 17 Princeton.
