No. 22 Men’s Soccer Falls to Michigan St. 2-1 in Double-OT
Oct 10 | Men's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 22 Rutgers men's soccer (7-3-2, 1-3-1) surrendered the Golden Goal in double-overtime to Michigan State (5-5-2, 1-2-1), handing the Spartans a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field.
Sophomore defender Cole Sotack equalized for Rutgers in the 52nd minute after the Spartans took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a marker in the 30th. Michigan State broke the tie in the second overtime period in the 107th minute of play.
"I feel for our guys because the result certainly was not for a lack of effort. They left it out there," said head coach Jim McElderry. "We created a ton of chances, but just could not find the winner before we gave one up in transition. We have to fix some things, but have some good things to take into a tough stretch of Big Ten matches on the road. The margins are extremely thin in this league, and we'll keep working for that margin."
Needing an equalizer just after halftime, Rutgers midfielder Matthew Acosta stepped up to a corner kick opportunity in the 52nd minute. He delivered a perfect serve into the mixer, where a charging Sotack headed the ball home for his first collegiate goal, and the second career assist for Acosta.
Sotack is the ninth different Scarlet Knight to score a goal in 2021.
Michigan State took five shots in overtime, with the one on target striking the back of the net. RU had three errant shots in extra time. Overall, the Spartans had a 20-19 advantage in shots, but Rutgers was the more accurate side with an 8-5 lead in shots on goal.
Rutgers heads out on a three-match road stint starting on Friday, Oct. 15 at Northwestern in a 7 p.m. ET kickoff from Evanston, Ill. on Big Ten+.
