Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 3 Field Hockey Topples No. 8 Maryland

Win is Program’s First over the Terps since 1998 and Fourth Top-10 Win this Season

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 3 Rutgers field hockey earned yet another signature win on Friday afternoon, taking down No. 8 Maryland. The win marked RU's first victory over Maryland since 1998, the final Big Ten foe for RU to defeat since joining the league. With the victory, the Scarlet Knights improved to 11-2 on the season and 4-1 in Big Ten play. It was their ninth ranked win of the season and fourth over a top-10 foe.

Milena Redlingshoefer scored the game's lone goal in the third quarter, converting on a penalty stroke. The goal was her team-leading fifth of the season. Gianna Glatz was spectacular between the pipes for RU, tying her career-high with 12 saves.

Maryland pressured RU continuously throughout the contest, holding a 15-6 advantage in shots and 6-0 margin in corners. However, Rutgers' defense held strong, and notched their third consecutive 1-0 shutout win.

The game was scoreless at halftime, before Redlingshoefer broke the deadlock with her fourth stroke of the season. From there, it was on the RU defense to hold onto the lead. Glatz made six saves in the final half and held off the Terrapins (9-5, 1-4) to secure the win.

"Our defense was so brave, so gritty," head coach Meredith Civico said. "They're so willing to do anything for each other. Gianna Glatz is just incredible. She's an amazing leader and an amazing player. The team has so much trust and confidence in her and in each other. It was so gritty and so Rutgers. That's Rutgers field hockey – willing to do anything for one another when we're playing. It's incredible."

With the victory, Rutgers has won three consecutive games, all Big Ten wins by a 1-0 final score, and have been victorious in seven of their past eight contests. The win over Maryland, the school where Rutgers' head coach won a national championship as a player in 2005, checked off the final box for the team in defeating each foe in league play.

"I'm really proud of the team and their overall performance." Civico said. "Maryland is a great program with a lot of national championships and a long history of winning. We've been working towards this moment, this season, for years. With our captains, we talked about it before the game, it's been a process for the past five years. Even six years, with Katie Larmour. We've learned so many lessons over the past couple seasons and we knew that today was our day and this year is our year. We're going to keep climbing and exceeding our performance game-after-game. We know it's one game at a time and that's been our focus this entire season, just compete as hard as we can every game, every opportunity and make the most of it."

Student-Athlete Quotes
"We had really good communication," Glatz said. "We knew they would come out strong. Going in, we wanted to have a good mentality and we had that today. To get another win against a top-10 team, especially a Big Ten team, is awesome. It really sets us up for a good standing going towards the Big Ten Tournament. And for our first-time beating Maryland in the Big Ten, making history today, that's awesome. It was super gritty, we were resilient, and at the end of the day we got it done."

"On defense, we were marking the key players in the game," Redlingshoefer explained. "We fought for each other. In that end, that's what made us successful. Having never beaten Maryland in a long time, and especially for Meredith Civico, that was a really important game. So, we just kept fighting for each other and in the end, that's what made us successful."
