PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 3 Rutgers field hockey completed a sweep of a two-game home weekend on a windy Sunday afternoon, defeating Columbia 2-0. The Scarlet Knights were buoyed by goals from
Bridy Molyneaux and
Milena Redlingshoefer, while
Gianna Glatz made five saves for her fourth consecutive shutout to boost the Scarlet Knights' record on the year to 12-2.
The Scarlet Knights controlled play for the majority of the play. The home team finished the games with distinct advantages in shots (28-6) and penalty corners (12-1).
"After such a hard game on Friday, we just focused on getting back to basics,"
Katie Larmour said. "We focused on looking after the ball, getting the simple things right, controlling the controllables and taking things into our own hands. It's great for the program being on this four-game winning streak and putting up shutouts. We have a tough end to the regular season coming up, so we'll keep focusing on what we need to do well and keep it going heading towards the postseason."
Rutgers put pressure on the Lions right away, recording 13 shots and four corners in the opening quarter alone. The team took the lead for good just eight minutes into the game.
Milena Redlingshoefer sent the ball to the back post, and
Bridy Molyneaux redirected it in to put RU in front for good.
The Scarlet Knights kept the intense pressure on throughout the contest. In the fourth quarter, RU was granted a penalty stroke.
Milena Redlingshoefer buried that for an insurance tally that put the result out of doubt.
"We knew we needed to score early, especially after a tough game and good win on Friday against Maryland",
Bridy Molyneaux said. "We were happy to get that goal early. We've been working together, that's when we're most successful, working as a team and moving the ball up the sidelines. That's been a key in our wins and we just have to keep that going. We have a deep bench with a lot of great players, and we use that to our advantage. Each week, we go into training with a goal and an idea of what we want to do and what we want to improve on. Each week we keep doing that."
Rutgers returns to the road in Big Ten play next weekend, travelling to No. 2 Michigan (Friday, 4:30 pm) and then at No. 19 Ohio State Sunday (12 pm, Big Ten Network). The team plays at home for the final weekend of the regular season, then hosts the Big Ten Tournament on the first weekend of November.
