PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Freshman forward Riley Tiernan picked up her second straight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor, the league announced Tuesday. Tiernan aided Rutgers in improving to 13-2 overall and an 8-0 record in conference action, extending the team's overall win streak to a program-record nine straight victories.
Tiernan started off the week by recording two assists in the 5-2 victory at Maryland, a goal total that marked the most by RU in a Big Ten contest.
The Voorhees, New Jersey, native then went on to assist the gamewinner in the 1-0 shutout of Michigan State, clinching at least a share of the 2021 Big Ten Championship. The first in program history for the Scarlet Knights.
The forward leads the team with five assist in Big Ten matches only, as well as ranking second overall in total points this season with 18 (4g, 10a). She is tied for fifth on the Rutgers single-season charts with her 10 helpers.
Claiming the honor for the second straight week, it marks the third weekly accolade of her young career and fourth freshman of the week honor for RU on the year.
Rutgers has claimed 10 conference weekly awards this season. The honors have included Co-Offensive honors for Frankie Tagliferri (8/31), Defensive accolades for Gabby Provenzano (9/7 & 9/28), Becci Fluchel (9/21 & 10/12) and Allison Lynch (10/5), and Freshman recognition for Riley Tiernan (8/31, 10/12 & 10/19) and Kassidy Banks (9/21).
Tiernan and the Scarlet Knights wrap up the regular season on the road with trips to Indiana (Thursday, Oct. 21) and Illinois (Sunday, Oct. 24).
