Field Hockey Super Seniors: On for Another Year

5 Scarlet Knights returned for additional season for one last ride

Field Hockey Super Seniors
Rutgers' 5 returning "Super Seniors: Kassidy Shetler, Gianna Mancini, Gianna Glatz, Katie Larmour, Kerrie Burns

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Rutgers athletics community was affected heavily. To help make up for the lost time, the NCAA granted Rutgers athletics an additional year of eligibility to play their desired sports.

Five Rutgers field hockey seniors (Kassidy Shetler, Katie Lamour, Kerrie Burns, Gianna Mancini, and Gianna Glatz) all decided to take the extra year to have the opportunity to play for a final season at Rutgers. In doing so, they’ve helped take the program to great heights. All five are starters that have played key roles in leading the team to a 13-3 record that includes victories over 10 ranked teams. Rutgers is currently ranked third in the nation and have positioned themselves as one of the nation’s top programs thanks to these players efforts.

I came back because I saw the potential of the program and wanted to be a Big Ten champion and eventually win the NCAA’s. When the opportunity came, I immediately knew I wanted to do it [take an extra year]. It’s crazy to see it now being a top-three program in the country.
Kassidy Shetler

Shelter’s abilities are highlighted in her performance on the field as she is poised to make her 70th career start this Friday. She has posted 12 career goals to go with four assists.

A pair of senior captains, Katie Larmour and Kerrie Burns, both from Northern Ireland, came to Rutgers for another year with the same goals and aspirations to win the B1G conference.

Katie Larmour, midfielder came back as a sixth-year senior, as a knee injury suffered in the 2018 season opener caused her to take a medical redshirt for that year. A starter in every game since her hiatus, she was named an All-American last season after finishing first on the team in assists and second in points. Having been a member of the program since 2016, Larmour is ready to put a stamp on her career this season.

I felt I had unfinished business at Rutgers and was fortunate enough to have this opportunity. I haven't been home since January 2020 due to the pandemic and have been very fortunate to have an amazing support system here and the families they’ve given to me.

I came back because of this team. I know we have a lot more to go and it's super exciting for the season to be competing for a chance in the NCAA’s. Due to the pandemic, it was sad to hear we weren't having a season but we took that opportunity, practiced and built ourselves to where we are right now.

Gianna Mancini has been a fixture in the midfield in her RU career. This season, she has tallied four goals, including the game-winning goal in double-overtime against Indiana in a 1-0 win.

Mancini took on her last year with her sister Isabella, who is a junior on the team. She is proud to be playing with her sister for one more year.

One of the main reasons I came back is because my sister is on the team here at Rutgers. So it's really nice to get an extra year to play with not only my teammates but my best friends, my sisters, and my family. Covid affected everyone differently. It was nice getting the chance to be with my teammates in such a tough time. It made us tighter and it was really nice to get to practice even though the times were hard. I also didn’t want to leave my amazing coaches and the bond we have together is so great. I’m glad we have another year and we aren't done yet!

Gianna Glatz, the Scarlet Knights’ goalkeeper, is the backbone of the team. She has five shutouts this season so far, including three against three nationally ranked teams and boasts one of the top goals-against-average marks in program history.

When the opportunity for an extra year presented itself, Glatz communicated with the advisor in the Graduate School of Education. They were very supportive of her pushing back her program, where she will still have the chance to pursue a Master’s Degree in teaching.

We are such a strong group and everyone works so hard. We deserve to have something come out of this season. Rutgers field hockey is the best thing I’ve ever been a part of. I love coaching staff and I believe that this year we had such a good opportunity ahead of us and we have a chance to move pretty far in the NCAA tournament.

Under head coach Meredith Civico’s guidance, these seniors have helped the program rise to new heights, making the NCAA Tournament in 2018.

This season the team has risen to a top-three ranking in the country and taken down 10 ranked teams. Regardless of the setbacks from the pandemic had, this team is ready to make this season a special one.

I couldn't imagine what these student athletes were doing when they had to balance academics, training, and performing. [Covid-19], it changed everyone's perspective towards what is more important which really made mental health a priority. It's really a testament to this program and players don't want to leave and they want to play. It’s incredible how much they love this program and team and want to be a part of something special here.

Super Seniors

This group has accomplished great things so far in their time ‘On the Banks’. With the opportunity to host the Big Ten Tournament on their home field next week, there’s serious momentum for this group to make a statement in this extra season at RU.

This team is amazing and I’m blown away by what they are able to achieve each and every single day. I love them. They are amazing and inspiring. They're doing something special for Rutgers history. We’re now a top program in the country and competing for championships. I’m really proud of this team and the players who came before them. Just the commitment and dedication of everyone who is involved in our program to get us to this point. It’s incredible!
