No. 6 Field Hockey Beats Indiana 1-0 on Mancini’s Double-OT Goal

The senior midfielder’s goal came 30 seconds before a penalty shootout

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 6 Rutgers field hockey and Indiana were 30 seconds away from a potential penalty shootout to break a scoreless tie before Scarlet Knight senior midfielder Gianna Mancini knocked in a pass from Lucy Bannatyne for the game-winner on Sunday afternoon at the Bauer Complex.

The Scarlet Knights moved to 9-2 on the year with a 2-1 mark in the Big Ten, while the Hoosiers dropped to 6-6 and 0-4.

Rutgers held the vast majority of possession and offensive chances in the tight victory that nearly went into a shootout. RU led 16-3 in shots, 7-1 in shots on goal, and 13-3 in penalty corner chances.

The double-overtime winner was created at midfield, where Iris Langejans gained possession and started the press forward. Katie Larmour kept possession and fired a pass forward into the circle to Bannatyne, who was challenged by the Indiana keeper and slotted a lateral pass to Mancini. It was the fourth goal of the 2021 season for Mancini, who one-timed the game-winner into the back of the goal.

Bannatyne, a freshman, picked up her first collegiate assist on the deciding goal.

"We had to dig in and find a way to win today against a good Big Ten team in Indiana," said head coach Meredith Civico. "I am proud of the effort in nearly an 80-minute battle, especially our response to Friday's result in a close loss to the No. 1 team in the country. We're excited to get back to work this week and get ready for Penn State."

Rutgers goalkeeper Gianna Glatz was not tested often, but came up big in a crucial moment at the end of regulation. The Hoosiers won two penalty corners and fired their only shot on goal of the game at Glatz, who swatted it away to force overtime with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

Senior back Liz Romano was active on attack with game-high marks of three shots and two shots on target. Mancini, Kerrie Burns, Bannatyne, and Milena Redlingshoefer all took two attempts at the IU goal on Sunday.

Rutgers has won five straight matchups against the Hoosiers. The Scarlet Knights hold a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series over IU.

The Scarlet Knights are back in action on Friday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. in another Top 10 Big Ten battle at No. 8 Penn State.
