PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's basketball is back in action Saturday at Jersey Mike's Arena following a 73-70 victory in the home-opener against Lehigh. RU will face Merrimack (1-0) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
The Merrimack College men's basketball team beat the Scarlet Knights next opponent New Jersey Institute of Technology on Thursday night 61-52.
Junior forward
Ziggy Reid led the way for the Warriors with a double-double. Reid scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the victory.
Some keys to victory for Merrimack on Thursday night were converting on 12 points off of NJIT turnovers and scoring 14 points in the paint in the game. Merrimack shot 40% from long-range knocking down nine threes, eight of them being made in the first half.
The Scarlet Knights crawled back in the second half of their home-opener against Lehigh.
Ron Harper Jr. led the team with a double-double performance, where he scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds. Center
Clifford Omoruyi showed major growth in his first performance of the season and had 16 points and nine rebounds on the game.
Geo Baker had 12 points and hit the biggest shot of the night with 45 seconds remaining in regulation as he converted on a step-back jumper to nod the score at 63. Guard
Paul Mulcahy added nine points, five assists and five rebounds in the effort.
Key to the game: Rutgers head coach
Steve Pikiell looks to get his team going from start to finish in this game. The Scarlet Knights were 0-7 from three-point range in the first half and will have to attack the unique zone defense of Merrimack College.
"I really like this team and I'm excited that we're 1-0," Pikiell said after the victory on Wednesday night. "That was our goal before the game. We grinded, and we'll watch film and do what we do against Merrimack."
