Tennis Returns to Court in One-Day Tournament with Maryland
Feb 05 | Women's Tennis
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis return to the court in a one-day tournament with Maryland on Friday at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Scarlet Knights and Terrapins competed in two rounds of doubles followed by one round of singles.
Rutgers claimed two doubles victories, while Maryland edged out four doubles wins. RU went on to collect four singles wins, as UMD took home two victories.
"I thought we all played really well and we brought a ton of energy," said junior Tess Fisher. "That was probably the most important thing because it's really easy to bounce off of how your teammates are doing and acting. If everyone's cheering for each other, then it really helps staying upbeat, positive and motivated to keep going."
In round one of doubles, the duo of junior Tess Fisher and freshman Alisa Prinyarux recorded a 6-2 victory over Maryland's Eva Alexandrova and Adela Josefova. The Scarlet Knights also saw pair of fifth-year senior Jaci Cochrane and freshman Daira Cardenas, and the duo of senior Maya Jacobs and junior Kristiana Zahare in action in the first round.
Moving into the second round of doubles, senior Isabelle Da Silva and Cochrane teamed up for a 7-6 (5) win over the Terrapins' Josefova and Ebony Sampson. RU's duo of junior Sydney Kaplan and Prinyarux battled UMD's Ayana Akli and Minorka Miranda in a tight 7-5 setback.
Cochrane, Fisher, Cardenas and freshman Chloe Brown all picked up individual victories in the singles round.
Opening the round was Cochrane with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Maryland's Josefova. Fisher followed with a victory over Alexandrova, battling to a 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 triumph.
Brown added a win of her own with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 rally, while Cardenas edged out a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory to close out the day.
All individual matches from today's meeting will count towards ITA results for the 2020-21 season.
Rutgers continues its 2021 slate on the road next weekend, including trips to Michigan on Feb. 13 and Michigan State on Feb. 14. The full 2021 schedule can be viewed here.
