EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers tennis defeated Michigan State by a score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. The Scarlet Knights claimed the doubles point and three singles victories for the win.
"I'm very proud of the effort and determination of this team today," said Head Coach Hilary Ritchie. "We have had so much adversity, as a lot of sports have had and a lot of teams had, but they keep coming out and working so hard. Today they just showed so much heart so I'm very proud of this team.
Rutgers claimed the doubles point over Michigan State to move to an early 1-0 lead. The duo of junior Tess Fisher and freshman Alisa Prinyarux picked up a 6-3 win at the No. 2 sport. The pair of redshirt-senior Jaci Cochrane and freshman Daira Cardenas contributed a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot to secure the point and the advantage.
Moving into singles, MSU edged out the first singles win before freshman Chloe Brown recorded a win at the No. 4 spot to put RU back in front, 2-1. Despite falling 6-2 in set one, Brown rallied for a pair of 6-3 wins in the following two to take the victory. It marked her third Big Ten win this season.
Cochrane followed up with a rally of her own, topping her opponent 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 to extend the Scarlet Knight lead. The victory was the first Big Ten win for Cochrane this season.
At the No. 1 position, senior Maya Jacobs fought to a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) victory to clinch the match for Rutgers. After battling to a 7-6 victory in the first set, Jacobs rallied from behind in the second to claim her second Big Ten win of the year and a team victory for the Scarlet Knights.
"It was really important to get this win. We were able to get the double point and translate that positive energy into our singles matches," said Jacobs. "Using that momentum really helps us so that we can swing freely and do really well."
Up next, Rutgers is on the road for its next three contests, beginning with Penn State on Friday, March 19.
