Gymnastics Posts Nine Top 3 Event Finishes at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – Rutgers gymnastics competed on the road at Maryland Wednesday evening, recording a team mark of 194.600. Sophomore Hannah Joyner finished as the runner up to the all-around title, including top three finishes in all four events to the lead the Scarlet Knights.

Senior Belle Huang followed with a third-place finish in the all-around, as RU recorded a total of nine top three event finishes in the outing.

BARS

Opening the meet on bars, freshman Avery Balser led Rutgers for the second straight meet, posting a 9.825 for second place in the meet. Joyner tied for the team lead and second place with an identical mark of 9.825. Freshman Calah Newman recorded a new career high of 9.750, senior Emily Drauss added a season high of 9.725, and Huang registered a 9.700 to round out the second-highest team bar score of the year at 48.825.

VAULT

Next up on vault, sophomore Jenna Ferguson recorded a career best for the third straight meet with a 9.775, finishing third in the event. Joyner tied for the third place with a 9.775 of her own. Freshman Emily Leese, Balser, Huang and Newman all competed on vault for Rutgers as well.

FLOOR

Moving to floor, Joyner paced the lineup with a powerful performance, earning a 9.875 to place third in the event. Huang contributed a 9.800 with her routine, while freshman Emily Wood and Balser each registered a 9.750. Freshman Stephanie Zanella and Newman competed in the lineup on floor too.

BEAM

Rutgers closed the meet strong on beam, as Zannella and Joyner tied for the title in the event with back-to-back 9.875 marks. The 9.875 marked a career high for Zannella on beam. Huang produced a 9.800 with her performance, while Ferguson match her season high with a 9.775.

ALL-AROUND

Joyner finished second in the all-around with a mark of 39.350 followed by Huang in third with a 38.975. Newman competed in all-around for the fifth meet of her young career.

KNIGHT NOTES

Rutgers met with Maryland for the third time this season, as the Scarlet Knights hosted the Terrapins on Jan. 23 and 30.
RU collected a total of nine top three event finishes in the Big Ten dual meet:
- Joyner led the way with first place on beam, second place on bars, second place in all-around, third place on vault and third place on floor.
- Zannella shared the event title on beam with a career high.
- Huang placed third in the all-around.
- Ferguson finished third on vault with a career high.
- Balser placed second on bars.
A total of five individual career and season highs were posted by the Scarlet Knights in the outing.
