Charalambides becomes 8th RU alumn in pro league ahead of playoffs starting
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Adam Charalambides was signed by the PLL's Cannons franchise, the team announced Tuesday afternoon. Charalambides becomes the eighth Scarlet Knights alumn to join a Premier Lacrosse team this season.
Charalambides played at Rutgers for seven years, finishing second all-time in program history in goals (149) and fifth in points (201). Last season, he was named an All-American and First Team All-BIg Ten selection while leading RU to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals.
Charalambides joins the Cannons ahead of the PLL's playoffs, which begin this weekend. The Cannons are the No. 7 seed, and will face the No. 2 seed Atlas this Saturday, in a 2:30 p.m. contest that will be a national TV broadcast on NBC. The Atlas feature two RU alumns in Michael Rexrode and Kyle Pless. Rexrode has excelled through the nine game regular season with 14 caused turnovers and 16 ground balls. He is sixth in the league in caused turnovers. Pless has eight ground balls and five caused turnovers in six games.
Another playoff game this weekend features a trio of Scarlet Knight alumni. At 6 p.m. Saturday, with a national TV broadcast on NBC Sports Network, the Whipsnakes and RU alumns Joe Nardella and Connor Kirst will face the Redwoods and RU alumn Jules Heningburg. This season, Nardella is third in the league with a faceoff winning percentage of 57% and also third with 66 ground balls. Connor Kirst has scored three goals through his first five professional games. On the other side of the field, Heningburg leads the league with a shot percentage of 48%, having posted 20 points on 15 goals and five assists.
The remaining two Rutgers alumns in the PLL now play for the league's top seed, the Waterdogs. Christian Mazzone, who played in four games with the Archers previously this season, joined the Waterdogs roster, where he teams up with Christian Scarpello, who has posted nine ground balls this season in seven games with the squad. The team has an opening round bye, and will next play in the semifinals on Saturday, September 5, a 1:30 p.m. contest on NBC Sports Network.
With the bracket set, a Scarlet Knight alumn is guaranteed to appear in the league's championship game. The title contest will be held Saturday, September 19, a noon game on NBC.The PLL playoffs will provide plenty of chances to watch former Scarlet Knights compete in nationally televised contests over the next month.
