#9 Women's Soccer Continues Big Ten Play with #18 Michigan, Nebraska

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 9 Rutgers women's soccer remains home to continue Big Ten play, starting with No. 18 Michigan on Thursday, Sept. 23. Start time is moved up to 4 p.m. and will be televised live on Big Ten Network. The Scarlet Knights then host Nebraska on Sunday, Sept. 26 for a 1 p.m. contest at Yurcak Field.
FREE ADMISSION AND PARKING | All home matches at Yurcak Field will have free admission and parking. For free parking, fans are required to register their vehicle by clicking here. A one-time sign up will have the vehicle set for all home contests this season.
RU'S LAST TIME OUT | Rutgers (6-2-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten) capped nonconference play with a 4-0 victory over Drexel on Thursday, its fourth shutout of the year. The Scarlet Knights then opened Big Ten action with a 2-1 win over then-No. 8 Penn State.
Seven Scarlet Knights contributed to scoring across the two matches. The sophomore class showed up strong, as Becci Fluchel led the way with the gamewinner in the Big Ten victory, her first career goal. Classmate Sam Kroeger recorded a goal in the win over the Nittany Lions, as well as an assist against the Dragons.
Sophomores Emily Sapienza (goal), Sara Brocious (2 assists), and Allison Lowrey (assist) all contributed points in the wins. Senior Frankie Tagliaferri added two goals against Drexel, while classmate Amirah Ali added a goal and an assist in the match as well.
BIG TEN PLAYERS OF THE WEEK | Sophomore midfielder Becci Fluchel and freshman back Kassidy Banks were named Big Ten Players of the Week. Fluchel picked up Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors, as well as Top Drawer Soccer's team of the week honorable mention accolades. Banks was tabbed Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week, as RU claimed two weekly awards in a single week for the second time this season.
Rutgers has claimed five conference weekly awards on the year. The Scarlet Knights have earned Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week accolades for Frankie Tagliafferri (Aug 31), Freshman of the Week recognition for Riley Tiernan (Aug 31), and Defensive Player of the Week honors for Gabby Provenzano (Sept. 7).
ON THE ATTACK | A total of 16 different Scarlet Knights have contributed to scoring this year. RU has outscored opponents 31-7 on the year, including 12 different goal scorers, seven multi-goal contributors, and 31 team assists. Tagliaferri leads the squad with 19 points (7g, 5a) on the season, while Tiernan (3g, 5a) and Kroeger (5g, 1 a) follow with 11 points. Ali (3g, 4a) and Brocious (3g, 4a) round out the double-digit point contributors.
Rutgers ranks third in the nation in scoring offense with 3.88 goals per game across eight matches. The Scarlet Knights lead the Big Ten and are top 6 in the nation in total goals (4th -31), total assists (5th - 31), and total points (6th - 93).
SHUTOUT SOCCER | The Scarlet Knights have registered four shutouts this season. Dating back to 2019, RU has held 36 straight opponents to single-digit shots on goal in each match.
MAC HERMANN TROPHY | Seniors Amirah Ali and Frankie Tagliaferri were named to the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. It marks the first time two Scarlet Knights have been added to the list in the same season.
IN THE RANKINGS | Rutgers is ranked in the Top 25 for the sixth straight week of the year, entering the top 10 for the second time at No. 9 in the lastest United Soccer Coaches Poll. RU is also ranked No. 21 by Top Drawer Soccer. The Scarlet Knights come in at No. 9 in the first RPI rankings of the season.

"The coaches prepared us really well in practice the past week and all of our energies were really high. Last week's wins prepares us well [for Big Ten play]. We know Penn State's a good side and we're also good side. We're ready to play more teams. We can't wait to see what the rest of season holds," said sophomore forward Emily Sapienza.
"It's great that we came out with a win [to open Big Ten play]. From the beginning of warm ups, we had really high intensity and everyone was hyped. Everybody wanted to play, everybody wanted to attack. [That intensity] will take us into the other matches. It gets us ready and prepared for the other nine games." said freshman forward Gia Girman.
