PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 10 Rutgers field hockey improved to 8-1 on the season with yet another ranked win, as the Scarlet Knights earned a 3-1 victory at No. 17 Princeton. The Scarlet Knights were buoyed by goals from
Liz Romano,
Gianna Mancini and
Kassidy Shetler to earn their fifth road win over a ranked team this season.
RU controlled much of the play in the game, using a 12-6 advantage in shots and earning six corners to Princeton's three. The Tigers struggled to penetrate RU's defense, placing just one shot on target.
The Scarlet Knights went down 1-0 early on but came back with a fury of scores.
Liz Romano scored the first goal of the game for RU, inserting a corner, and then receiving the ball back for the finish. Her goal kept the game even at 1-1 heading into halftime, with the Scarlet Knights outshooting the Tigers 6-2 in the opening half.
In the third quarter, RU scored two goals just five minutes apart to take and expand their lead. Off a penalty corner,
Milena Redlingshoefer sent the ball towards the back post, and
Kassidy Shetler redirected it in. Then, it was
Gianna Mancini adding to the leading.
Guillermina Causarano sent the ball in front, and Mancini finished it off for a 3-1 lead.
The Scarlet Knights return to action next weekend with two Big Ten home games. RU will host No. 2 Iowa on Friday and Indiana on Sunday. The games mark the first Big Ten contests this season at the home of the upcoming Big Ten Tournament in November.
