HAMILTON, N.Y. – Rutgers field hockey earned a 3-1victory over Colgate on Sunday afternoon at Tyler's Field. The Scarlet Knights swept the weekend road trip through New York, earning the team's third road win of the year to follow up on Friday's 7-2 win at Albany. RU improved to 4-4 on the year while the loss dropped Colgate to 3-4 on the year.

Rutgers was in command for much of the game, taking the lead initially 11 minutes into the game, leading 2-0 at half, and closing out a 3-1 win. Rutgers outshot Colgate 19-8, while corners were 8-8.

Lauren Iaccio, Frederique Vernooij and Anna Cogdell had the goals for RU. Emily Nicholls made five saves for RU.

The freshman back Lauren Iaccio scored her second goal of the season late in the opening quarter off a corner, while Talia Schenck and Frederique Vernooij picking up assists. Vernooij then scored RU's second goal of the game, just before halftime. Schenck had the assist on that goal as well, now leading RU with five assists on the season.

Colgate cut into RU's lead in the opening minute of the first quarter, capitalizing on a corner. In the fourth quarter, Cogdell provided the insurance goal for RU that iced the game.

Up Next

Rutgers will return to the road next Friday, with the Big Ten Conference opener. That comes against current No. 5 ranked Maryland, a 4 pm game on Big Ten Network. The team returns home to the Bauer Complex on Sunday, hosting La Salle at noon.
