Tiernan Elevated to Assistant Coach
Jan 13 | Women's Soccer
Rutgers women's soccer Head Coach Mike O'Neill has announced the elevation of Madison Tiernan to Assistant Coach. Tiernan, who is an alumna of the program, joined the staff in 2017 as Director of Player Development.
"Madison is one of the top young coaches in the country. She is a Rutgers legend and a Jersey legend. Madison has achieved success at every level of her soccer career. Her knowledge, experience, work ethic and passion to teach will greatly benefit all our student-athletes. She made the decision to stay home and represent New Jersey as a player and now she will do the same as a coach," said O'Neill.
"Madison had a decorated career at Rutgers, followed by a decorated career in the NWSL with Sky Blue FC, her resume speaks for itself. We are excited to get Madison on the recruiting trail as she will greatly elevate our program by using her past experience to connect closely with recruits who have the same aspirations to play at the next level. "
Across her time on staff, Tiernan has helped guide Rutgers to five Big Ten Tournaments, three Big Ten Tournament semifinals, and five NCAA appearances. With the staff in 2021, Tiernan aided the Scarlet Knights in bringing home the first ever Big Ten Conference title in program history and Rutgers history, going undefeated 10-0 in league play. Following its third Big Ten Tournament Championship appearance, RU secured its 10th straight NCAA Tournament bid, advancing to the College Cup for the second time in program history and first since 2015 when Tiernan was a student-athlete on the team.
"As a Rutgers Women's Soccer alumni, I knew the second my playing career ended 'On the Banks', my time there was far from over and there was still more to achieve. I am so grateful for the opportunity to drive the culture and be a part of the process towards competing for and winning championships. Mike and the coaching staff shaped me into a great player who was able to compete at the highest level both collegiately and professionally," said Tiernan.
"As I enter this next chapter of my life, I'm looking forward to giving back to the game by helping the development of the next generation of soccer players. I feel extremely lucky to be working alongside the top coaches in the women's game. Thank you to the coaching staff and everyone who's supported me; family, friends and my soccer community. Forever Rutgers!"
Tiernan competed with the Scarlet Knights from 2013-16, concluding her senior season with a team-high 28 points on 11 goals and six assists. The team captain earned NSCAA Second Team All-Great Lakes Region and Second Team All-Big Ten honors in 2016, wrapping up her career "On the Banks" ranked second all-time in shots (275), tied for fifth in game-winning goals (nine), sixth all-time in total goals (25), and seventh all-time in points (66).
During her time on the pitch, Tiernan guided the Scarlet Knights to three conference championship games, including two Big Ten Tournament Championships. In 2015, she led Rutgers all the way to the College Cup for the first time, knocking off the No. 1 ranked team in the nation along the way.
Following her collegiate career, Tiernan was drafted 24th overall by local NY/NJ Gotham FC, formerly Sky Blue FC, of the NWSL. At the time, the club played home matches at Yurcak Field - the home of Rutgers women's soccer. She announced her retirement from professional soccer in the summer of 2020.
Tiernan has coached for PDA, one of the top youth girls clubs in the country, for the last four years. Under her guidance, her teams have achieved great success on the national stage.
The Voorhees, New Jersey, native earned a B.A. in American Studies with a minor in education as a social science. Tiernan resides in Matawan with her fiancé, Ned.
