Fisher Records First Ranked Singles Win in Victory over St. John's

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Rutgers tennis claimed its second straight victory, topping St. John's 5-2 on Sunday evening at the East Brunswick Racquet Club. Despite dropping the team doubles point, the Scarlet Knights rallied five singles win to claim the match.
Highlighting the outing, senior Tess Fisher became the first Scarlet Knight in program history to earn a singles win over a ranked opponent. Fisher contributed a singles victory at the No. 1 spot and a doubles win with freshman Minchae Kim.
Though St. John's earned the first doubles win at the No. 2 spot, Fisher and Kim responded with a gritty 7-6 (7-5) victory at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 3 spot, sophomore Chloe Brown and freshman Jackeline Lopez also went neck-in-neck with their SJU opponents, however, the Red Storm edged out the matchup with a slim margin of 7-6 (7-3).
Rutgers then came alive in singles play. Kim started off the momentum for the Scarlet Knights, posting a 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 5 spot. Lopez followed with a 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot to put RU in front, 2-1. At the No. 6 position, senior Kristiana Zahare recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win to extend the Rutgers lead to 3-1.
Fisher secured the victory for the Scarlet Knights, rallying a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win at the No. 1 spot to set the advantage at 4-2. Fisher's win over SJU's Mouna Bouzgarrou marked the first ranked singles win recorded in Rutgers history, as Bouzgarrou is ranked No. 112 in the latest national ITA rankings.
Sophomore Daira Cardenas capped the match with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot for RU's third win of the year.
Rutgers is set to travel for two matches next weekend. The Scarlet Knights start with a trip to UMass on Saturday, February 12 followed by a stop at UConn on Sunday, February 13.
