PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers field hockey celebrated its 2021 Big Ten Tournament championship on Friday afternoon by participating in a special Rutgers University tradition. The team gathered to 'Ring the Bells' at Old Queens.Â
The event was preceded by speeches from Athletic Director
Pat Hobbs, field hockey head coach
Meredith Civico, and team captain
Gianna Glatz to an assembled crowd of fans and family members. The team then went inside the building, where they could ring the historic bell, and signed the wall inside the closet where the bell is kept to mark the achievement.Â
"I want to thank everyone that has been a part of this journey," Civico said. "To be part of the first Big Ten Tournament championship for any team ever at Rutgers and do that on our home field with all our supporters was so special. I'm so proud of this team. We knew they were special. They are an incredible group of not just athletes, but how they are as people and young women."
"It was an amazing season and really the five years that I've been here, what we've built with this program." Glatz said. "To accomplish something like this and be able to share that moment with everyone is unreal. We appreciate all the support of everyone behind the scenes, that's so important to our program. We're so thankful for everyone and so lucky to share this special moment with everyone."
