WORCESTER, Mass. – No. 17 Rutgers rowing earned seven medals, including two event wins by the 3rd Varsity 4 and 2nd Novice 8, on Sunday at the Women's Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond.
All eight Scarlet Knights boats competed in the grand finals on Sunday in the championship-style event that featured 17 teams from No. 5 Brown, Boston College, Boston University, Colgate, Columbia, Cornell, Connecticut, Dartmouth, Drexel, Harvard, Holy Cross, UMass, Marist, Northeastern, Rhode Island, and Temple. Rutgers claimed wins in all five of its heat races during the morning session.
"I am really proud of how our team represented Rutgers after a productive week of training with almost every athlete winning a medal," said head coach
Justin Price. "I was especially impressed with the competition between our two boats in the 3rd Varsity 4 race along with the 2nd Novice 8 and thought they did an excellent job showcasing the depth of our team. We are looking forward to getting back to training to continue building toward the Big Ten Championship in two weeks."
The Scarlet Knights' two wins came in events that went straight to grand finals. Two Rutgers boats finished first and second in the 3rd Varsity 4 competition to kick off the grand finals. One RU boat edged the other by 7.5 seconds and defeated the third-place boat from No. 5 Brown by 21.5 seconds. Racing Boston College head-to-head in the 4th Varsity 8 race, Rutgers' 2nd Novice 8 claimed the gold with a 20.7-second victory.
Rutgers' Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 4, and Novice 8 all finished second in their grand final races behind the winning boats from No. 5 Brown. The 2nd Varsity 4 came closest to the Bears with a 5.6-second deficit.
Rutgers enters championship season beginning with the Big Ten Championships on Sun., May 15 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
