Big Ten Freshman of the Year adds to Scarlet Knights’ long tradition of national team representatives
CHICAGO – Rising sophomore forward Riley Tiernan was called up to join U-20 U.S. Women's Youth National Team (WYNT) for a pair of friendly matches against Costa Rica on May 15 an 18 at the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. Both matches will be held as closed-door scrimmages.
Tiernan, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, put her talents on display from the very first time she donned a Scarlet Knights uniform, scoring a goal in her collegiate debut. She went on to start all 25 matches as Rutgers turned in a historic 2021 campaign which included the program's first Big Ten Championship behind an 10-0 mark in conference play.
The Scarlet Knights advanced to their 10th-straight NCAA Tournament, earning the No. 1 seed and a trip to the College Cup for the second time in program history. The Voorhees, N.J., native started all 25 matches and led the team with 13 assists, matching a single-season program record for the program. She finished third on the team in total points (29), adding eight goals and a game winner.
Tiernan was a key component of a Rutgers offense that outscored opponents 64-17 in 2021. She went on to receive All-Big Ten First Team, Big Ten All-Freshman Team, and All-Region First Team honors. Tiernan was one of two Scarlet Knights to earn an invitation to the U-20 USWNT year-end training camp in December.
