PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Men's basketball's guard Cam Spencer has been recognized as the Co-Big Ten Player of the Week following his performances in the victories at Northwestern and vs. Ohio State last week. Spencer shares the award with Fletcher Loyer of Purdue.
Spencer is the second player ever at RU to win the award and it marks the third time a Scarlet Knight has been named the Big Ten Player of the Week. RU guard Geo Baker won the award in March each of the previous two seasons.
Spencer scored an RU career-high 23 points and made the game-winning shot against the Wildcats in Evanston, Ill. On Wednesday. Spencer knocked down both free throws at the line on RU's final possession to seal the victory over Northwestern 65-62 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Spencer shot a lethal 6-for-7 from three-point range. He added four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in the victory.
On Sunday at Jersey Mike's Arena, Spencer had another career performance in the win over the Buckeyes. The Scarlet Knights were propelled by another game-high scoring performance by Spencer, who had 21 points. He added six assists, four steals and six rebounds. Spencer scored 16 points in the second half.
Spencer was the first Big Ten player since 2010 to have at least 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists, four steals and one or fewer turnovers in a game. Spencer is averaging 13.9 points-per-game, and 3.6 steals-per-game on the season. Spencer is second in the Big Ten conference with 47 steals. He is shooting 47.4 percent from the field, 87.1 percent from the free throw line and 47.7 percent from downtown.
With 21 points, he was the first RU player to have back-to-back games of 20+ points in Big Ten play since Ron Harper Jr. (Dec. 14, 2020 vs. Maryland and Dec. 20, 2020 vs. Illinois). He reached double digits for the fifth straight game and has scored in double-figures in six of seven Big Ten games. He has scored at least 13 points in the past six games, averaging 14.4 points per game in that span.
Spencer averaged 22.0 points, 5.5 rebounds ad 4.0 assists in 37 minutes-per-game. Spencer also hit the game-winning three-point shot January 2 as RU defeated the No. 1 Purdue Boilermakers at Mackey Arena, marking the best road win in school history.
