The Four Things to Know...
Rutgers gymnastics closed out the 2023 regular season in spectacular fashion on Saturday at Jersey Mike's Arena, winning the tri-meet against UPenn and No. 35 West Virginia with a new program-record score of 196.875.
The historic team score was fueled by a new program record on beam (49.400), tying the school record on vault (49.275), and Emily Leese tying the individual school record on vault with a 9.925. Overall, 10 Scarlet Knight performances set or tied career-bests to push Rutgers to its top score in program history. The beam team set a new program record 49.400, dropping a strong score from Aird (9.700) and scoring high marks from Emily Leese (career-high tying 9.825), Jacqueline Manifold (career-high 9.900), Gianna Ortiz (career-high tying 9.875), Joyner (9.875), and Stephanie Zannella (career-high tying 9.925).
The Scarlet Knights scored a 196.225 for its fourth-highest score in program history in a dual meet at NC State on March 4. The Scarlet Knights' third 196+ of the season was powered by a 49.400 on floor (second-highest in school history) and a 49.150 on bars (fourth-highest in school history), and by senior Hannah Joyner, who led Rutgers in all four events and scored a 39.500 in the all-around, including a 9.900 on bars and 9.925 on floor.
The Scarlet Knights have shined on beam in 2023, ranking 23rd in the NCAA with an NQS of 49.185. Hannah Joyner scored a 9.950 on beam for the third time in her career to tie the school record in a Big Ten dual at No. 18 Iowa on Feb. 18. The big score, coupled with junior captain Stephanie Zannella's anchoring and career-high 9.925, pushed the Scarlet Knights to a 49.175 on vault, the ninth-best score in program history.
Sharing the record with Erin McLachlan (2020), it is the fourth time in program history a gymnast has hit 9.950 on beam. Joyner has a 9.950 on beam in each her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons.
Hannah Joyner has been named First Team All-Big Ten for a fourth consecutive year. The senior all-arounder is the first gymnast in Rutgers history to earn four All-Big Ten First Team honors.
This feat is the latest in Joyner's historic collegiate career "On the Banks," in which she has competed in the all-around in every single event of her run as a Scarlet Knight. She is the program record holder in the all-around with a 39.575 and has recorded the top three all-around scores in school history this season with two scores of 39.525 joining the school-record 39.575. She also holds the school record on beam with a 9.950, a mark she has reached three times, including once in 2023. This season, she has reached a 9.9 or higher in all four events, matching her career-highs 9.900 on vault, 9.950 on beam, and 9.950 on floor, while setting a new career-bests on bars (9.925). Overall, she holds another program record with 39 scores of 9.9 or higher – including 11 from this season.
Rutgers scored a 195.750 at the 2022 Big Ten Championships, its highest score at the postseason conference meet since joining the league in 2015. Hannah Joyner was named to the All-Championship team, finishing tied for seventh overall in the all-around with a score of 39.350. Joyner was sixth overall on beam (9.900) and seventh overall on floor (9.900).
