PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – No. 15 Rutgers rowing will send all three of its boats to the C/D semifinals at the 2023 NCAA Championships after heat racing on Friday at Cooper River Park.
With three automatic qualifiers to the A/B semifinals available in each heat, all three boats - the Varsity 8, the 2nd Varsity 8, and the Varsity 4 - placed fourth in their morning heats.
The Varsity 8 was in an A/B qualifying position after 500 meters, then a second off No. 8 Virginia's pace at the halfway mark. The Scarlet Knights finished fourth 4.3 seconds behind the Cavaliers as No. 5 Washington and No. 1 Princeton finished first and second, respectively.
The 2nd Varsity 8 kept it close with No. 13 SMU in a battle for the third and final A/B qualifying spot, trailing by 2.2 seconds at the 1,000-meter mark. The Rutgers boat finished fourth nine seconds behind SMU, while No. 1 Princeton and No. 9 California took the top spots.
The Varsity 4 battled No. 14 Duke for the third and final A/B qualifying spot until the end of 2,000 meters. The Blue Devils held a slight edge throughout the race, but were never more than two seconds ahead of the Scarlet Knights, including the final time separated by just 1.8 ticks with Duke advancing to the A/B semis. No. 2 Texas and No. 9 California also advanced in first and second place.
Saturday's C/D semifinals will have the top six spots up for grabs for Sunday's C finals, which awards national places 13-18 in each event. The remaining boats in the C/D semifinal move to Sunday's D final for national places 19-22.
