Scarlet Knight teammates conquer the world competition in Bulgaria
PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – Rutgers rowers Victoria Grieder and Hannah Heideveld are world champions representing the United States at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Bulgaria from July 19-23. Heideveld earns her second consecutive gold medal with the Americans at the U23 World Championships.
Rutgers has now had representation and medalists at the U23 World Championships in each year since 2018 (excluding the COVID-canceled 2020). This is the second consecutive year with two world champions from Rutgers, with five different athletes winning medals and six total gold medals since '18.
The U.S. crossed the finish line with an open-water victory in a 6:09.14. Germany finished second, with Canada holding off Great Britain at the line for third. Germany finished with a time of 6:13.34, while Canada finished in a 6:16.99, just 0.06 seconds ahead of Great Britain.
The World Rowing Championships attract nearly 1,000 of the best rowers under the age of 23 as it sets out to be the top event for young rowers across the globe. The pair of Scarlet Knight teammates led Rutgers to its fourth consecutive NCAA Championships in 2023, placing 15th in the nation.
