Women's Soccer Concludes Road Trip With 1-1 Draw at No. 19 Penn State
Oct 04 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – In its second consecutive match on the road against a ranked opponent, Rutgers women's soccer (8-1-3, 4-0-2) came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw, this time at No. 19 Penn State (9-3-2, 3-2-1) on Friday evening at Jeffrey Field. RU tied No. 1 Michigan State, 1-1, on Sunday in its last match.
The Nittany Lions scored early in just the fifth minute, but the Scarlet Knights again battled back to earn the Big Ten point on the road when freshman midfielder Shaela Bradley collected the ball outside the box in the 47th minute early in the second half. After a few dribbles around defenders, her hard and low show took a deflection and found the back of the net to draw the score even at 1-1.
Following the equalizer, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer made five of her career-high tying nine saves during the second half in the draw. Penn State took 10 shots on target while outshooting RU, 20-9, overall. Bodmer's brick wall preserved the point on the road.
Sophomore forward Ashley Baran nearly equalized just a minute after Penn State's opening goal, but her header hit the post and bounced back into play in the sixth minute.
Allie Post, Riley Tiernan, and Kylie Daigle, along with Bradley, all tested the Penn State keeper with shots on target in the contest. On the other end of the pitch, Bodmer stopped four of the five shots on goal taken by the Big Ten's leading scorer, Kaitlyn MacBean.
Rutgers returns home after a three-match road stint for a nationally televised tilt against Nebraska on Thu., Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Yurcak Field and live on Big Ten Network.
