No. 15 Stony Brook Stops Late Rally from Women's Lacrosse

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Despite a late comeback attempt, Rutgers women's lacrosse (6-8) lost to No. 15 Stony Brook (11-2), 13-10, on Tuesday night at LaValle Stadium. Down as many as eight on the night, the Scarlet Knights rallied with six consecutive goals across the third and fourth quarters to draw within two before the Seawolves held on in the final minutes for the victory.
Junior Alexa Corbin tallied a team-high four points on three helpers and a goal, graduate student Cassidy Spilis netted a hat trick and juniors Victoria Goldrick and Michelle Warren added two goals apiece. Rookie Reese Robinson collected two points in the second half, while junior Emalie Clothier and sophomore Ava Kane contributed assists. Senior Mikayla Dever netted a clutch goal during RU's comeback attempt.
The Seawolves used a 27-18 shot advantage and a 9-2 scoring run across two halves for the out-of-conference win. It was the fourth consecutive season the two programs have met after Rutgers secured its first win in the series last spring at SHI Stadium. Both teams also played one another in the 2021 and 2022 NCAA Tournaments.
With her three goals on Tuesday night, Spilis is now three points away from surpassing current assistant coach Taralyn Naslonski for the most points in program history at 267. Earlier in the day, Spilis was named Big Ten Midfielder of the Week for the fifth time this season.
After becoming the sixth goalkeeper in school history to secure 500 career saves, senior Sophia Cardello stopped eight shots in the loss. Spilis had a season-high nine draw controls to go along with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
It was a back-and-forth opening quarter, as Spilis countered a 2-0 scoring run from Stony Brook with her 57th goal of the season at the 7:06 mark in in the first. Goldrick followed with her first of the night two minutes later to tie the game at 2-2 with 5:37 left before the first break. The Seawolves added a quick goal to regain their lead at 3-2 heading into the second quarter.
Goldrick tied the game again to open the second period before Stony Brook closed out the quarter with five consecutive goals for a 8-3 lead at halftime. Cardello stopped six shots before the midpoint.
Stony Brook outscored Rutgers, 4-2, in the third quarter, as Spilis and rookie Reese Robinson added goals to make it 12-5 with 15 minutes to play.
Robinson's goal late in the third quarter sparked a 6-0 scoring run to get the Scarlet Knights back in striking distance. Corbin found Warren on back-to-back opportunities to begin the fourth quarter before she followed with a goal on a free position attempt to make it 12-8 with 11 minutes to play.
Robinson then found Dever at the 8:47 mark, which was followed by Spilis' third goal of the night. The finish off a pass from Corbin pulled Rutgers to within 12-10 with just over eight minutes to play. RU had several scoring opportunities down the stretch, but the Seawolves added an insurance goal at 2:44 on the clock and bled off just enough possession time for the win.
