BETHEL, Ohio – No. 13 Rutgers rowing will send its Varsity 4 boat to the A/B semifinals on Saturday at the NCAA Championships at East Fork/Harsha Lake. The Rutgers Varsity 8 and 2nd Varsity 8 will be competing in the C/D semifinals on Saturday following heat racing on Friday at the national regatta.
With three automatic qualifiers to the A/B semifinals available in each heat, the V8 and 2V8 placed fourth in their morning heats. The V4 claimed third to advance to the A/B semis.
The Varsity 4 overcame a split-second deficit at the 500-meter mark to overtake and hold a four-second advantage over No. 14 Virginia to place third in their heat and qualify for the A/B semifinals. The RU boat was just 2.2 seconds behind No. 8 Brown, while No. 5 Yale won the race.
The Varsity 8 was six seconds behind an A/B qualifying spot, which was claimed by No. 4 Princeton, No. 9 Michigan, and No. 11 Pennsylvania.
The 2nd Varsity 8 came a minuscule four-hundredths of a second away from qualifying for the A/B semifinals, just a blink of an eye behind No. 14 Virginia. Rutgers was also just 1.5 seconds off second-place No. 4 Princeton. No. 2 Stanford won the heat.
Saturday's A/B semifinals will determine the field competing in the grand and petite finals. The top three of each A/B semifinal will advance to the grand final (national places 1-6) and the other six boats will move to the petite final (national places 7-12) on Sunday. The C/D semifinals will have the top six spots up for grabs for Sunday's C finals, which awards national places 13-18 in each event. The remaining boats in the C/D semifinal move to Sunday's D final for national places 19-22.
