PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior forward
Riley Tiernan assisted on two goals in a 3-0 win for Rutgers women's soccer (6-1-1, 2-0-0) over Oregon (4-5-0, 0-2-0) on Thursday night at Yurcak Field in the first match as Big Ten opponents. The two helpers moved Tiernan to 30 career assists, the new all-time record "On the Banks."
Â
"It's all because of the team," Tiernan said. "We have a lot of talent and depth this year, so knowing I can dish the ball out and my teammates are going to put it in the back of the net is key. You can't be an assister without those people that are going to put the ball away."
Tiernan started early, passing on the first dish from
Ashley Baran to
Allie Post in just the eighth minute, when Post charged the open space created by Tiernan's pass around the penalty spot and buried the shot for the 1-0 lead.
Freshman
Shaela Bradley made it 2-0 in the 26th when Tiernan's low cross was smartly dummied by
Gia Girman to a streaking Bradley, who blasted an attempt with her left foot to the right side of the goal. It was her second career score.
Â
In the second half, Rutgers maintained its dominant possession and built a 31-2 shot advantage. In the 84th,
Kylie Daigle made it 3-0 after taking a short pass from Riley McGlinn and ripping a banger into the top shelf for her second of the year.
By match's end, Rutgers led 12-1 in shots on goal, with Oregon's one attempt being stopped by
Olivia Bodmer, who shared the shutout with senior
Cameron Kennett. It was Rutgers' sixth shutout of the season and fifth consecutively. Senior center backs
Kassidy Banks and
Emily Mason kept their streaks alive playing 90 minutes in every game this season.
Â
Rutgers stays home to host another new Big Ten opponent – Washington – on Sun., Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. at Yurcak Field and live on B1G+.
