PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers swimming and diving held its season-opening meet on Saturday, hosting St. Bonaventure and Fordham. The Scarlet Knights excelled in a strong opening meet. The Scarlet Knights won 221.50-87.50 over St. Bonaventure and 218-81 over Fordham.
The Scarlet Knights won 11 events and two relays overall on the swimming side, with a number of quality performances in the pool.
Ana Hazlehurst,
Ellie Schinsky and
Sofia Bartoloni all finished first in multiple races.
Megan Fox,
Emilianna Gonzalez and
Angelica Bath all had one first place finish apiece. Rutgers also finished first in two relays.
The diving program had a strong showing after being ranked as the No. 6 diving program in the nation this week in a preseason coaches poll. The Scarlet Knights had the top four placements on both the 1M and the 3M boards.
Amelia Scott won the 3M event, while
Katerina Hoffman placed first in the 1M. Scott (sixth all-time) and
Bailee Sturgill (eighth all-time) both set placements on RU's all-time top tens with personal best scores.
Notable performances
Swimming
- Newcomer and Big Ten Preseason Swimmer to Watch Ana Hazlehurst won the 200 yard freestyle in 1:52.21, finishing first by more than two seconds. She also won the 400 Yard IM, finishing in 4:26.46.
- A pair of RU newcomers finished 1-2 in the 50 yard freestyle. Freshman Emilliana Gonzalez won the event in 23.31, while Anna Vlachou finished just behind her in 23.58.
- Rutgers also saw a 1-3 finish with two newcomers in the 200 yard backstroke. A transfer from the University of Toronto, Angelica Bath won the event in 2:02.52, while freshman Goksu Dogan finished third.
- Ellie Schinsky won the 200 yard butterfly at 2:04.30, while teammate Cameron Kuriger was just behind her at 2:04.44
- Sofia Bartoloni won the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, while freshman Emily Volchansky placed second in the 200 and third in the 100.
- RU touched the wall first in the 200-yard Medley Relay.
- Rutgers had the first three swimmers in the 100 yard butterfly, with Ellie Schinsky winning the event at 55.90, followed closely by newcomer Anna Vlachou (55.92) and Cam Kuriger taking third.
