Terps Take 1-0 Win in OT
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – On a windy fall afternoon on Friday, No. 17 Rutgers field hockey played its final home game of the 2025 regular season. The contest took overtime to decide, with No. 11 Maryland taking a 1-0 victory.
Rutgers now stands at 8-8 overall on the season and 3-4 in conference play. The contest was RU's second straight overtime game and fifth overtime contest this season. After starting the season at 7-4 and 2-0 in Big Ten play, RU is 1-4 in the past five games.
With the win, Maryland improved to 9-6 overall and up to 5-3 in conference play. Maryland has now won four of the past six games in the series.
The game was fairly even throughout, without a large amount of overall scoring chances for either side. Ultimately, Maryland had a 9-6 advantage in shots and 3-2 margin in penalty corners.
Goalkeeper Emily Nicholls made four saves for the Scarlet Knights. Her biggest moment came at the end of regulation, when a pair of untimed corners gave the Terps a late chance, with Nicholls turning two shots away to force extra time.
Maryland finally broke through in overtime. Annemijn Klijnhou sent a ball into the circle to Maia Adamson. There, Adamson corralled possession and found space around the defense that swarmed her and sent a shot home for the game's only and deciding goal.
RU travels to State College to face the Nittany Lions next Friday in the regular season finale. That contest is at 5 p.m. The Scarlet Knights can clinch a berth in the Big Ten Tournament with a victory over the Nittany Lions. The league tournament is in Bloomington this season, with Indiana University hosting the event beginning on November 6. The bracket will be unveiled following the conclusion of conference play next Friday.
Of Rutgers' eight losses on the year, all of them have come to ranked teams. Three have been in overtime and five have been by one goal.
