RU Hall of Famer Named to O-60 Women's Roster for even in Netherlands This Summer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers field hockey alumna and Rutgers Athletics Hall of Famer Maria Grant was named to the Roster for the Team USA Women's O-60 squad for the upcoming 2026 Masters World Cup.
There is a record-breaking global participation for this event with over 400 teams from across the world registered to compete. Team USA has 15 different teams competing from the 35 to 65 age range. The 2026 World Masters Hockey (WMH) World Cup will take place July 22 to August 16 across four cities: Brasschaat (Belgium), Breda (Netherlands), Schiedam (Netherlands) and Rotterdam (Netherlands). Grant and the O-60 team will head to Belgium for competition on August 6-16.
"We continue to be impressed by the dedication and growth of Masters athletes through the selection cycle," U.S Masters High Performance Committee Chair Janelle Benner said. "Having dedicated coaches provided us with multiple training opportunities to both sharpen and evaluate skills, guide conditioning, and develop team cohesion, which bodes well for our performance this summer."
Grant was a four-year letter winner for the Scarlet Knights field hockey program from 1981 to 1984. Grant's defensive prowess was impressive as she was an integral part of the 1984 team that was ranked 10th nationally and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Final 8 for the first time in program history. Recognized as a Penn Monto/NFCHA Regional All-American and the team's "Best Defensive Player", Grant was also a member of the United States Women's Field Hockey squad and was selected to participate in the 1982 U.S.A. National Sports Festival. In 2024, she was recognized by the school as she was inducted into the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame.
Off the field, Grant joined the coaching ranks where she served as a volunteer assistant coach for both the Rutgers women's lacrosse and field hockey programs imparting knowledge and leadership to the next generation of student-athletes. She also served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach at Syracuse, helping the field hockey team to a No. 10 national ranking and securing a spot in the ECAC Tournament. She has continued to coach field hockey and lacrosse at independent and public schools and at the club level currently serving as the Director of Girl's Lacrosse at nationally ranked Building Blocks Lacrosse North Division and Head Girl's Lacrosse Coach at Ramapo High School.
