Third Different Field Hockey Freshman to Win a Big Ten Freshman of the Week Award this Season
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers field hockey was bestowed a Big Ten weekly award on Monday in the league's final weekly awards announcement of the regular season. Olivia de Zwaan was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
The accolade for de Zwaan made her the third different RU freshman to earn a Big Ten Freshman of the Week award this season. Previously, Emily Nicholls and Martha Goodridge had claimed Freshman of the Week awards. Additionally, Puck Winter and Emily Nicholls have earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week awards.
In RU's game at Penn State, de Zwaan tallied just over four minutes into the game. The goal gave RU the lead for good, as the Scarlet Knights took the momentum from that first goal and turned that into a 3-0 first quarter lead and 4-2 victory.
The native of The Netherlands has six goals on the season, third on the team. Her six goals are the most tallies by a RU freshman since Lucy Banatyne had eight goals as a freshman in 2021.
Olivia de Zwaan and the Scarlet Knights wrapped up the regular season with nine wins after defeating Penn State, and reached four Big Ten wins for the third straight season. With the win, RU officially earned their spot in the 2025 Big Ten Tournament, which will be hosted by Indiana University.
The Scarlet Knights, ranked No. 18 in the RPI and the No. 5 seed, play in game one of the event on Thursday at 11 a.m., facing No. 4 seed and RPI No. 21 Michigan. With a win over the Wolverines, the Scarlet Knights would be slated to face No. 1 seed Northwestern on Friday in the semifinals (1 p.m.).
