PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Despite leading at halftime and being tied in the fourth quarter, Rutgers women's lacrosse (5-3) lost at No. 12 Stony Brook (5-2), 11-8, on Wednesday night at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Beginning its stretch of six ranked opponents in their final 10 games of the regular season, the Scarlet Knights outplayed the Seawolves in the first half, taking a 5-2 lead into halftime while forcing the home team into seven first-half turnovers. However, Stony Brook used a 3-0 scoring run in the fourth quarter and held RU off the board in the final 11 minutes of play to secure the out-of-conference win.
Earning her first career start in cage, sophomore Stella Quilty saved a game and career-high 13 shots, including seven stops in the opening 30 minutes. Senior Katie Buck helped Rutgers to a 13-9 advantage in center circle with a game-high eight draw controls. Buck and classmate Kimberly Greenblatt led the team with three caused turnovers apiece.
Sophomore Hilary Elsner tallied a game-high four points on three goals and an assist, while classmate Caroline Ling added three points on two scores and a helper. Freshman native Kate Theofield contributed two goals off the bench, while senior Lily Dixon and junior Payton Tini tallied two points each.
It was a defensive battle in the first 15 minutes of play, with Theofield's unassisted goal at the 5:45 mark in the opening quarter the only goal before the first break. Quilty saved five shots in the opening period to help the defensive unit.
Both teams traded goals before Rutgers closed the second quarter on a 3-0 run. Elsner, Ling and Tini all contributed during the stretch, with Ling's finish off a pass from Dixon with 2:28 left gave the Scarlet Knights a 5-2 lead at the midpoint.
RU's defense forced Stony Brook in seven first-half turnovers, owned a 7-2 advantage on the draw and stopped seven shots on goal before heading into the locker room.
The Seawolves began their comeback in the second half, producing a 4-1 scoring run to take its first lead of the game at 7-6 with 6:02 left in the third quarter. Elsner responded with her third of the night, taking a pass from Dixon and tying the score heading into the final break of the night.
One more tie followed in the fourth quarter, thanks to a free position goal from Theofield to make it 8-8 with 11:27 left to play. But Stony Brook used three consecutive goals over the next two minutes and stout defense down the stretch for the win.
