Damaso Muñoz

Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Miami, Florida, Damaso Muñoz is in his fourth season on the staff. He spent 2020 and 2021 as a defensive assistant for the Scarlet Knights. Muñoz was a four-year letterwinner as a Rutgers linebacker from 2006-09, as the team won a bowl championship each season.

Previously, Muñoz served as an assistant coach at Florida powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas, helping the team to a perfect 15-0 record, after working with defensive backs and special teams at NAIA Keiser University.

As a player, Muñoz was recruited to Rutgers out of Miami Southridge High School and went on to play in 51 games for the Scarlet Knights with 200 career tackles, 20 tackles-for-loss and three interceptions. He also had a 35-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the St. Petersburg Bowl, a 45-24 victory over UCF.

Muñoz was signed by the Chicago Bears in 2010 and later by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had a successful six-year career in the Canadian Football League, playing with the Edmonton Eskimos and Ottawa Redblacks. He served as captain for the Redblacks in 2016 and earned the team’s defensive player of the year.

Muñoz graduated from Rutgers with a bachelor’s degree in labor management in 2010.
