Rutgers Rallies to Defeat Miami in Double OT, 6-5

“We have talked a lot about heart and a lot about determination, and if you are trailing 5-2 and come back to win 6-5, that’s all about heart,” third-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. “This is the first time we have caught a break all year, and I’m sure we’ll be able to maintain this if we can keep everyone healthy.”
Miami took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but sophomore All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) got RU on the scoreboard just 1:02 into the second half, and assisted on junior Adrienne Dugandzic’s (Sicklerville, NJ) game-tying goal in the 51st minute. The Hurricanes responded with three unanswered goals, a spurt capped by Vonda Matthews’ successful penalty kick in the 72nd minute.
Trailing 5-2 with 18:01 to play, the Scarlet Knights mounted a comeback. Lloyd scored on Dugandzic’s thru-ball in the 77th minute, followed just two minutes later by freshman Danae Risoli’s (Hillsborough, NJ) score on passes from Dugandzic and freshman Ashley Shaban (Oakland, NJ). Shaban, who scored her first point with the assist, evened the match in the 83rd minute and scored the game winner with 8:28 to play in the second overtime period, heading in Risoli’s cross to the right side of the box.
“Ashley had hardly played the first half of the season,” Crooks said. “She could have given up. But, she kept working hard every day and she has seen more and more time. I’m very happy for her. It also was great to see Carli and Adrienne play so well off each other. That’s something that we’ve been missing this season, but they played great tonight.”
For Shaban, the five-point breakout performance was an early birthday present – she will turn 19 next Tuesday. The six-goal outburst was the highest total for the Scarlet Knights since defeating St. Bonaventure 7-1 on Oct. 28, 1998. The 11 combined goals were the most since RU defeated La Salle 11-0 on Oct. 10, 1986.
Senior Christine Caldwell (Wyckoff, NJ) made one save in the victory (7-6-2).
Lloyd moved into fourth place in goals (25) and fifth in points (62) on the RU career record charts.
Rutgers was rated ninth by Soccerbuzz and 10th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Oct. 14). Miami was rated ninth by both groups in the Southeast Region.
Rutgers will host Loyola (6-4) on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6:00 p.m. in the Scarlet Knights’ home finale.
