Scarlet Knights Fall to DePaul
Oct 09 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, NJ – An early goal was the difference as the Rutgers women’s soccer team (4-9-1, 1-6 BIG EAST) lost to DePaul (3-6-4, 1-3-3 BIG EAST) 1-0 Oct. 9 at Yurcak Field.
DePaul struck 2:30 into the match, when Amy Witt redirected Julianna Sitch’s free kick to Lauren Spatch in the middle of the six-yard. Spatch knocked it home, giving the Blue Demons the early lead.
The Scarlet Knights had their best chance of the first half with seven minutes on the clock. Senior Danae Risoli (Hillsborough, NJ) had a free kick from 22 yards out on the right side, and sent a dangerous ball on goal. DePaul keeper Cara LaRocca knocked it down, but junior Jaime Komar (Matawan, NJ) settled the deflection and shot towards the right post. Unfortunately for RU, a DePaul defender was on the line and was able to keep Rutgers off the scoreboard.
RU had another opportunity midway through the second half on a corner kick by senior Zoe Avner (Paris, France). LaRocca dropped her initial attempt on Avner’s ball, and redshirt sophomore Meghan Ryan (Crofton, MD) was waiting on the goal line and tried to poke the loose ball into the back of the net. But, the DePaul keeper was able to stop the second attempt and preserve the victory.
Redshirt junior Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) made one save in goal for the Scarlet Knights. RU outshot the Blue Demons 9-2 and had a 7-0 advantage on corner kicks.
“Our chances of getting into the BIG EAST Tournament have slimmed with this loss, but it’s still possible,” said sixth-year Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. “We just didn’t have that sense of urgency today that we had in the last five matches. But this team has shown a lot of character. We have lost some games that I have to say I didn’t think it was fair for us to lose. But I expect the team to remain resilient and come back Tuesday night and be ready for Princeton. I have to give credit to our team. They have fought through a lot of adversity this season, and that adversity has come in the form of not getting a lot of breaks even though we’re playing good soccer.”
RU will host in-state rival Princeton Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7:00 p.m.
