COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (2-2) lost its first match of the Maryland/adidas Classic, falling to UC Santa Barbara (2-3) 2-0 Sept. 8 in College Park, MD.
After playing a scoreless first half, the Gauchos struck twice in a 10-minute span to take control of the match. In the 62nd minute, Katie Smith knocked home a loose ball six yards in front of the goal. Then, in the 70th minute, Genelle Ives headed in Allie Kueny’s corner to give UCSB the final two-goal advantage.
Despite the two-goal differential, Rutgers had just two fewer shots (11-9) than UCSB. Freshmen Alicia Hall (Port Republic, NJ) and Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, NJ) each had a pair of shots for the Scarlet Knights.
Redshirt junior Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) made five saves in goal for the Scarlet Knights (2-2).
“We had some chances, both off set pieces and in the run of play,” said sixth-year Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. “We’re only four matches into the season, so every match is a learning experience. Santa Barbara is the best team we have played so far this season, and Maryland could be even better when we play them Sunday. We just have to look at this as a learning experience. As long as the team stays together, believes in each other and continues to work hard, we’ll be fine.”
The Scarlet Knights will finish play at the Maryland/adidas Classic Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2:30 p.m. against the host Terps.
