The Scarlet Knights' 9-1-1 record is the first time in school history the team has won nine out of its first 11 games. The last time Rutgers scored five goals or more was last season in a 6-2 win at Pittsburgh on October 2, 2005.
"Eight goals on the weekend is great for us," said head coach Glenn Crooks. "We had five different goal-scorers today and different people contributing who may not have had the opportunities that others have so far this season. It's very good for the team."
Rutgers took control offensively from the start, scoring its first goal in the 12th minute of the match. Following a South Florida foul, Jaime Komar (Matawan, N.J.) took a free kick from the right side of the field, nailing it through traffic in the goal box. Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) came up with it, heading it past Bulls' goalie Casey Garrett, scoring her fourth goal of the season.
Fifty-five seconds later, the Scarlet Knights took a 2-0 lead when DeMaio blasted a shot past Garrett from 30 yards out. The goal is DeMaio's fourth on the season.
At the 23:15 mark, DeMaio gave Rutgers another scoring opportunity, dribbling around two defenders and nailing a cross in the direction of Jenifer Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.) and Kristie Lang (East Brunswick, N.J.), however, the Bulls' Paulina McIntosh cleared the ball before Anzivino or Lang could get a foot on it.
With 22:15 remaining in the opening half, the Bulls had a scoring opportunity of their own, as Michelle Buskey made a cross to Ebony Robinson who headed it towards the goal, but Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) came up with a save for the Scarlet Knights, ending South Florida's scoring threat.
In the 25th minute of the game, Rutgers gave itself a 3-0 lead on a goal from Alicia Hall (Port Republic, N.J.). DeMaio lined up a free kick after a South Florida foul and nailed it into the goal box, Hall headed it in for her sixth goal of the season.
South Florida's Jaleesa Scott got a breakaway with four minutes remaining in the half, but Nina Montero (Vineland, N.J.) chased her down and made a slide tackle, kicking the ball to Guthrie in the goal box.
In the second half, the Bulls came out looking to push the ball as Robinson and Scott had a breakaway in the opening minutes of the half. As they pushed the ball forward, Meghan Ryan (Crofton, Md.) was able to knock the ball loose and Guthrie dove on it to end the scoring opportunity for South Florida.
Rutgers got its fourth goal of the match in the 57th minute of the game, when Jennifer Dexter (Roxbury, N.J.) scored her first collegiate goal. Kim Mineo (Glen Rock, N.J.) took a shot from the left side, but Garrett blocked the ball, making the save for the Bulls. Dexter flew in from the right side, collecting the rebound and put it in the back of the net for the Scarlet Knights.
With 18:02 left in the game, Hall nearly scored again off a Rutgers corner. Seeing Garrett out of position, Hall headed the ball towards the bottom left corner of the goal, but South Florida back Natalie Nunez made the team save for the Bulls.
The Scarlet Knights got their final goal of the match from Lauren Esposito (East Brunswick, N.J.) off an Amanda Allessio (Langhorne, Pa.) assist. Allessio sent the ball forward to Esposito on the left side of the box and she nailed it into the bottom left corner of the goal past Garrett.
Rutgers outshot the Bulls, 19-5 as Guthrie made one save in goal for the Scarlet Knights. Sarah Volkomer (Glen Rock, N.J.) also saw time in goal for the Scarlet Knights, making her first career save.
Looking ahead to the Princeton game, Crooks is excited about the anticipated atmosphere surrounding the game. Rutgers will close out a four-game home stand on Wednesday, Oct. 1 against its in-state rival with the game being broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel at 8:00 p.m.
"It's exciting-we're playing well at home right now and taking charge of your own turf is something you always want to do as a program," he said. "Princeton is a tremendous team. I anticipate a great game. We'll have a great crowd and adding the excitement of a national television audience is tremendous. It's going to be a lot of fun."
