Rutgers Softball Drops Mid-Week Doubleheader at Princeton
Mar 29 | Softball
PRINCETON, NJ - Early leads in both games were the difference makers as the Scarlet Knight softball team (6-21) was swept in a doubleheader by intra-state rival Princeton (12-8) on Wednesday afternoon at the Class of 1895 Field in Princeton, NJ. Rutgers was edged 2-0 in the first game and fell by a score of 9-2 in the nightcap.
The Tigers converted all the offense they needed in the opening frame as a leadoff single by Cristina Cobb-Adams and a walk to Kathryn Welch proved costly for the Scarlet Knights. Erin Snyder and Amanda Erickson followed with a pair of one-out RBI singles to give Princeton its lead and the eventual 2-0 victory.
The Scarlet Knights threatened Princeton's lead at the start the sixth inning with back-to-back singles from freshmen Brittany Loisel (Gilbert, AZ) and Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, CA) but the rally fell short as both were left stranded on base.
Junior Nicole Freeman (Sandy, UT) (1-6) took the loss for the Scarlet Knights, earning both runs on six hits and a pair of walks with two strikeouts.
In game two, Princeton took the early lead in the first inning, this time going ahead one score on an RBI single to right-field. The Tigers extended their lead to three (3-0) in the second with a base-clearing triple to right by Cobb-Adams and added another run in the third to take a 4-0 advantage.
Rutgers, however, cut the lead in half (4-2) with a two-run home run by freshman Sarah Kalka (Moreno Valley, CA). Kalka crushed a ball over the left-field fence for her third home run in as many games, plating classmate Kaitlyn Valiante (Mt. Laurel, NJ), who earned a single in the previous at-bat.
With the Scarlet Knights on their heels, Princeton added five runs in the fifth inning to secure its 9-2 victory. The Tigers drove in runs on a pair of an RBI single, a pair of two-run doubles and a two-run home run.
Freshman Christina Yard (Hillsborough, NJ) was saddled with the loss (2-7) in game two, while senior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) and Freeman both made appearances in relief.
Rutgers will return to the RU Softball Complex for three consecutive home-doubleheaders, including four BIG EAST Conference games. Rutgers will host Pittsburgh on Saturday, April 1, and Syracuse on Sunday, April 2, both tilts scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm.
