DeMaio's Goal Lifts Rutgers to Win Over Richmond
Aug 27 | Women's Soccer
HARRISONBURG, VA - Gina DeMaio's (Parsippany, NJ) goal with 44 seconds left in the match lifted the Rutgers women's soccer team (2-0) to a 2-1 win over the University of Richmond on Aug. 27 at the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational.
Karla Schacher (Tolfield, Alberta), Kim Brand????o (Rahway/Rahway, NJ) and DeMaio were named to the All-Tournament Team as the Scarlet Knights finished 2-0 at the weekend-long invitational.
With the game tied 1-1, DeMaio cut past a Richmond defender and nailed a shot from 25 yards out to give the Scarlet Knights the win. Head coach Glenn Crooks was pleased with the team's performance, particularly in the second half.
'[Tying the game] gave Richmond some life, but down the stretch we really put some pressure on them,' he said. 'When they scored, we had to battle through that.'
After a scoreless first half, Rutgers took a 1-0 lead when Schacher scored in the 51st minute of the match. Courtney Roarty (Edison, NJ) nailed a cross from the left side of the field to Schacher who headed the ball in for the score.
Less than 10 minutes later, Richmond scored on a counterattack to tie the game. Julia Bizer took a shot eight yards out that bounced off Rutgers' keeper Erin Guthrie (Sparta, NJ) and into the goal.
'We looked good defensively, and other than the goal they scored, we defended well and didn't give [Richmond] many opportunities,' Crooks said. 'That one moment where they beat us on a counterattack we were a little out of position.'
Following the Spiders' goal, Crooks was impressed with the way the Scarlet Knights moved on and 'went back to work.'
'In both matches, even when we were down on Friday and tied today, you got the feeling from our team that they still thought they were going to win the match,' Crooks said. 'They weren't distraught and didn't lose confidence. They didn't overreact when they were in pressure situations and that's a sign of a quality team.'
The Scarlet Knights outshot the Spiders 24-8 and also had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-1. Rutgers backline of Nina Montero (Vineland), Ashley Lunemann (Hillsborough, NJ) Jaime Komar (Matawan, NJ), Meghan Ryan (Crofton, MD and Brand????o allowed Guthrie to see only two shots during the game as she posted one save.
'Overall it was a great weekend,' Crooks said. 'We wanted to come down here and get two wins and we were able to do that. They were two great wins for us and a good way to start the season.'
Rutgers will host its home opener at Yurcak Field against Drexel on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. The Scarlet Knights will also be home on Tuesday, Sept. 5 against Monmouth at 7:00 p.m.
