Rutgers Shuts Out FDU 3-0

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Alicia Hall (Port Republic, N.J.) scored two goals to lead the Rutgers women's soccer team (4-1) to a 3-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson (1-4) on Sept. 10 at Yurcak Field.
Coming off of a loss to Stanford on Sept. 8, head coach Glenn Crooks was looking for the team to get a good start in the game.
"We wanted to react productively to the loss and take something away from it," he said. "We didn't want FDU to come in thinking we were going to roll over because we were coming off a loss. The attitude that we wanted to take was to come out well and all three of the goals were set up nicely and they all started with winning something defensively and that built into an effective attack."
The Scarlet Knights took control early, dominating possessions from the start of the game. In the 31st minute, Rutgers got its first good look at the goal on a free kick from Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) that went just wide of the goal.
Hall scored her first goal of the game at the 24:58 mark. Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.) started the play, making a pass to Caycie Gusman (Honolulu, Hawaii) in the box who then sent it to Hall for the goal.
Less than 10 minutes later, Hall tallied her second goal. Edmonds took a shot from the right side of the box that FDU goalie Rachel Derrico was able to block. Seeing the goalie didn't have possession of the ball, Hall rushed up the middle of the box and blasted the ball into the back of the net, giving the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 lead.
Just before the end of the first half, the Scarlet Knights got their third goal. Working together in the goal box, Edmonds made a pass from the right side to Kristie Lang (East Brunswick, N.J.) on the left who nailed it past Derrico on the bottom right corner of the goal.
In goal for Rutgers, Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) and Sarah Volkomer (Glen Rock, N.J.) split time, but the Scarlet Knight defense, led by Kim Brand????o (Rahway, N.J), Jaime Komar (Matawan, N.J.), Meghan Ryan (Crofton, Md.), and Ashley Lunemann (Hillsborough, N.J.), held FDU to just five shots in the game.
After posting 26 shots in the win over FDU, Crooks knows the team will need to capitalize on more of those opportunities in order to be successful.
"Going into BIG EAST play, we want to make certain that we're still become more and more organized and used to playing together," he said. "More so than anything, when we have opportunities to score, we want to make sure we can finish them. With that said, we'll be taking a lot of shots in training this week."
The Scarlet Knights will open their BIG EAST slate on Friday, Sept. 15, when they play Seton Hall. The game will be played at NJIT due to construction at Seton Hall and will begin at 3:00 p.m.
"We're going to train on field turf this week and get ourselves ready since that's the surface we'll be playing on at NJIT," Crooks said. "Home or away it's the BIG EAST opener and that speaks for itself. The team has set the goal of winning the BIG EAST championship and that starts on Friday."
