Rutgers Falls to No. 15 Notre Dame 3-1
Oct 28 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - For approximately 31 minutes, the Rutgers women's soccer team looked like the team to beat. Facing No. 15 Notre Dame, Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.) scored on an assist from Jenifer Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.) to put the Scarlet Knights ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute. But 12 minutes later, a controversial call by the officials gave Notre Dame a penalty kick, and junior Kerri Hanks converted to tie the game at one. Notre Dame would go on to score two more goals for the 3-1 win.
"I am not disappointed with how we played but I am disappointed by the final outcome," said head coach Glenn Crooks. "We had an opportunity to win the match but we could not quite get it done. Give Notre Dame a lot of credit, they finished their opportunities. We had chances to score but we were unable to put the ball in the net."
On the Rutgers goal, Anzivino lobbed a beautiful pass over the defense to Edmonds, who was stationed at the right corner of the goal. Edmonds then tapped it in for her second goal of the season. For Anzivino, the assist was her fifth of the year.
With the loss to Notre Dame, RU finished in fifth-place in the National Division, after Villanova defeated Cincinnati 1-0. Rutgers will play at St. John's on Thursday, Nov. 1, in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Scarlet Knights have made the BIG EAST Tournament every year since Crooks became the head coach in 2000.
"I am happy we will be local for our first round game," said Crooks. "I take the whole season as a package, and with everything we went through this season, to have made the BIG EAST Tournament is a tremendous accomplishment. I am very proud of the girls."
Before the game, Rutgers honored seniors Amanda Allessio, Domenique Esposito, Leia Rispoli, and Meghan Ryan with a special Senior Day ceremony.
