PISCATAWAY, N.J. - After falling behind 1-0 in the 56th minute, Rutgers regrouped to score two goals in a twenty minute span, then held on to defeat the Bucknell Bison 2-1 in front of 548 fans Wednesday night at Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights were unable to capitalize on early opportunities, shooting 13 times in the first half but heading to the locker room in a scoreless tie. That theme would continue even into the second half, as Rutgers had many chances to get on the scoreboard, but thanks to a fine game from Bison goalie Kathryn Sutton who had 10 saves, RU was unable to get their offense on track.
The Bison, who fell to 1-2, unlocked the scoreless tie in the 56th minute when Christa Matlack was able to get the ball past Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.), who gave up her first goal of the season. The Scarlet Knights offense then came alive, as Rheanne Sleiman (Vancouver, B.C.) scored her second goal of the season when Sutton failed to bring in a pass from one of her teammates. Sleiman was able to hustle to the ball and knock it into the net to tie the game at one. Ten minutes later Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) scored her second goal of the season on a free kick.
Rutgers improves their record to 3-0. The team next plays Sunday afternoon at 1pm against the Monmouth Hawks at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J.
