PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 15 Rutgers women’s soccer team’s consecutive scoreless streak ended at 454 minutes as St. John’s defeated the Scarlet Knights 1-0, Friday night at Belson Stadium. The Scarlet Knights (10-4-1, 5-2-1) gave up a goal for the first time in four games when the Red Storm (6-4-4, 2-3-2) scored 10 minutes into the second half.
“We didn’t come together as a team in this match like we have in the majority of our other games,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “There were things we needed to do and we didn’t execute them as well as we have in the games we’ve been successful. It was poor execution and not the same kind of effort and team play that we’re accustomed to.”
After a scoreless first half, Red Storm midfielder Sarah McGrath sent a pass to junior defender Courtney Lane, who took a shot from 30-yards out. The ball was able to get past RU goalkeeper Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.), who gave up just her eighth goal of the season. For Lane, it was the first goal of her career.
“Sometimes you have a blip in the season and we felt this was it,” said Crooks. “It was an off-night for us, but St. John’s deserves a lot of credit, it was a pretty even game. We didn’t look dangerous at all. We have to sort out how we’re going to score goals. St. John’s played very well in the second half and that’s where the won the game.”
The loss ended Rutgers’ four-game non-losing streak. St. John’s becomes the first team to score against the Scarlet Knights since Georgetown on Sept. 28.
RU returns to action on Sunday when it faces Syracuse at 1:00 p.m.
