Apr 03 | Softball
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Rutgers softball team (12-18) dropped game one of a doubleheader but bounced back to win game two against Stony Brook (14-12-1) on Thursday, April 3. The Seawolves won the first game 10-5 while the Scarlet Knights took game two 2-1.
Rutgers took a three run lead in the first inning of the opening game on a two-RBI double to center field by senior Mallory Miller (Anaheim, Calif.) who drove in juniors Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, Calif.) (single) and Amanda Heller (Belle Mead, N.J.) (hit by pitch). Junior Kim Hodges (Houston, Texas) pushed across the third run with an RBI-single, allowing Miller to score from second base.
Miller plated another run with a fielder's choice in the second to extend the Scarlet Knights' lead to 4-0. Stony Brook rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to close the gap to 4-4.
The Seawolves tacked on four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead and pull away with the victory. The Scarlet Knights put together a rally of its own, adding another run to the scoreboard in the top of the seventh but the final push fell short.
Senior Christine Royland (Westwood, N.J.) pinch hit to start the inning and singled to right field. Shaw reached on an error by the third baseman to give the Scarlet Knights runners on first and third. Heller then drove in the run with a double down the right field line.
Game two was a stalemate as it remained scoreless through the first five and half innings with both teams combining for just six hits.
Stony Brook earned a one run lead in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run, however, the Scarlet Knights struck back with winning runs in the top of the seventh to take the nightcap.
Junior Kate Valiante (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) led off with a single, followed by a walk to junior Sarah Kalka (Moreno Valley, Calif.) to give Rutgers a pair of runners on the bases. Sophomore Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) entered to pinch hit and laid down a sac bunt to move the runners in scoring position.
Senior Ashley Hartley (Ripon, Calif.) singled up the middle to drive in the tying run, while an error two at-bats later allowed the game clinching run to score.
Junior Chrissy Yard (Hillsborough, N.J.), who picked up the win to move to 4-9 on the season, struck out two batters and induced a ground-out to end the game in the seventh. She finished with five strikeouts for the game.
The Scarlet Knights will return to the RU Softball Complex and their conference schedule with a pair of BIG EAST doubleheaders against USF on Saturday, April 5 at 12:00 p.m., and Louisville on Sunday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m.
