PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 13, 2009) - After an emotional overtime win against DePaul and a hard fought loss to then-No. 8/9 Notre Dame, the Rutgers women's soccer remains at No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. The No. 10 NSCAA ranking is the highest in program history. The Scarlet Knights ranked tenth last week after moving up three spots from No. 13 in week six.
Previously, the Scarlet Knights sat as high as 13th in the NSCAA poll after defeating Georgetown and tying Villanova Sept. 25-27. RU also ranked 16th after their west coast trip to Tucson, Ariz., where the squad went 1-1 against then-No. 21 San Diego and Arizona.
RU fell to No. 19 in the Soccer America rankings. Last week, the Scarlet Knights stood at 12th, the second highest placement of the 2009 season. Rutgers rose to as high as No. 11 in week three after defeating Towson and then-ranked No. 13/10 Penn State. Rutgers started the season at 21 in the Soccer America Poll.
On Sunday, RU needed an extra 4:43 to upend BIG EAST National Division foe DePaul, 2-1, at Yurcak Field. Sophomore Julie Lancos (Belford, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal - her second goal of the season - on a free kick from the 30-yard line in the 94th minute.
Rutgers battled for 90 minutes Friday, but fell short, 1-0, against then ranked-No. 8/9 Notre Dame at Yurcak Field. Senior goalkeeper Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) made six saves on the night, but it wasn't enough as Notre Dame's Lauren Fowlkes found the net in the 83rd minute of the match.
RU owns a 10-2-3 overall record, 4-1-2 mark in the BIG EAST. Rutgers remains in second place in the BIG EAST National Division with 14 points. The Scarlet Knights hold a one point advantage over Georgetown.
Rutgers will be at Yurcak Field for its final two BIG EAST home matchups against Syracuse on Thursday, Oct. 15 and St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Syracuse game will be shown on Verizon FiOS 1 through tape delay. Saturday's game will be shown on www.scarletknights.com through Knightvision Broadband.
