PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 27, 2009) - The Rutgers women's soccer team maintains its No. 9 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Poll after a 1-0-1 weekend in BIG EAST play. The No. 9 ranking is the highest in program history.
Last weekend, Rutgers handily defeated Syracuse, 2-0, and St. John's, 1-0, to rise to No. 9 in the NSCAA Poll for the first time in program history. In the final weekend of BIG EAST play, the Scarlet Knights needed 49 extra seconds to defeat Cincinnati, 1-0, at Gettler Stadium. At Louisville, RU went down in the 14th minute, but scored the equalizer three minutes later. The Scarlet Knights could not find the net again, coming away with the draw.
After defeating Marquette (3-1) and knotting USF (0-0), RU broke into the top ten for the first time in program history on Oct. 6 and maintained their position on Oct. 13.
Rutgers also rose four spots to No. 11 in the Soccer America rankings, tying the highest mark of the season. The squad climbed to No. 11 in week three after defeating Towson and then-ranked No. 13/10 Penn State. Last week, the Scarlet Knights stood at 15th, rising four spots from No. 19. Rutgers started the season at 21 in the Soccer America Poll.
For her efforts over the weekend, redshirt freshman Stefanee Pace (Kearny, N.J.) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll, the first of her career. Pace notched both assists to extend her team-leading total to six in 2009. In the 1-0 win over Cincinnati, Pace corralled the corner kick from sophomore Julie Lancos (Belford, N.J.), taking a shot that hit the crossbar. Junior Kelsey Dumont (Wrightsville, Pa.) sent the rebound past the UC netminder for the score. Against Louiville, Pace again took a shot from inside the box that Louisville keeper Katie Zoeller saved. Redshirt freshman April Price (Mechanicsville, Va.) was right there for the rebound, tying the game.
Over the weekend, the Scarlet Knights clinched a bye and home field advantage in the BIG EAST Tournament. RU will take on West Virginia - the No. 3 seed in the American Division - Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live through Knightvision Broadband on www.scarletknights.com.
