Erin Guthrie Named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year

HARTFORD, Conn. (Nov. 5, 2009) –Three Rutgers women’s soccer standouts earned All-BIG EAST accolades, the conference announced Thursday. Rutgers senior captain Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year honors Senior defender Jen Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.) also earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team, while junior forward Ashley Jones (Feasterville, Pa.) grabbed All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades.
“This is a great honor to be named the top keeper in one of the top conferences in the country,” said Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. “She has performed at a consistently high level since her arrival at Rutgers and this award is the culmination of years of sacrifice and dedication to her sport. Erin is one of the most respected leaders in the history of our program, and when her career has finally ended here, I anticipate seeing her on a professional roster in WPS.”
Guthrie becomes the first conference Goalkeeper of the Year and second BIG EAST position player of the year (Carli Lloyd earned Midfielder of the Year in 2004) for the Scarlet Knights. The netminder followed up her preseason selection, tallying the highest number of minutes played in conference action (1,063), allowing just six goals for a 0.51 goals against average. The senior captain totaled 48 saves, posting a .889 save percentage and had five shutouts against the BIG EAST.
Overall, Guthrie posted a league-best .43 GAA and allowed just eight tallies over 18 matches during the regular season. She notched 10 clean sheets in 2009, breaking Olympian Saskia Webber’s career shutouts record at RU with 43. Including postseason play, Guthrie owns the fifth-best GAA in the nation. Of the four student-athletes in front of her, all have played in fewer games and seen less minutes in goal.
Earning All-BIG EAST First Team accolades, Anzivino led a back line that allowed just .50 goals per game and helped to achieve 11 shutouts in 2009. The senior captain played and started in every game, playing every minute in 16 matches. She scored two goals on the season, including the equalizer on a penalty kick in an emotional overtime win over DePaul. At center back, Anzivino allowed opponents just four shots on goal per game.
“Jenifer is perhaps the most talented player in our program,” said Crooks. “She was the best back I saw in any match this season. She is that good. A professional career awaits Jenifer. She is a special player who has been instrumental in our success over the past four years.”
Before injuring her leg in the game against DePaul, Jones went on a scoring tear – tallying eight goals in six-straight games, including four game-winners to grab Second Team All-BIG EAST accolades. Her first score came at then-No. 13/10 Penn State, giving the Scarlet Knights their first win at Jeffrey Field. During the stretch, Jones also scored game-winners against Seton Hall (in overtime), Princeton and Georgetown. Scoring just four goals prior to this season, Jones paces the Scarlet Knights with 19 points on eight goals and three assists.
“Even though Ashley missed several BIG EAST games, I think it is still worthy that she earned All-BIG EAST honors,” said Crooks. “She made such an impact that coaches around the league recognized. This honor was well deserved. She has really grown up in her time here at Rutgers. We, as a coaching staff, knew Ashley was going to have a big year, and she is such a big part of where we are now.”
