Rutgers Softball Drops BIG EAST Doubleheader To No. 20 DePaul

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers softball team (16-27, 3-13 BIG EAST) resumed conference play this weekend for a BIG EAST doubleheader against No. 20 DePaul (29-9, 13-2 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 18. The Blue Demons took game one 11-2 and game two 5-0.

DePaul scored a run in the top of the first inning of game one and the Scarlet Knights responded in the bottom of the frame with a run of their own to tie the score at 1-1. Senior Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, Calif.) reached on an infield error to provide Rutgers with a base runner. Shaw advanced to second on the error, moved to third on a bunt single from Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash.) and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by senior Amanda Heller (Belle Mead, N.J.).

The Blue Demons scattered five runs over the next three innings to increase their lead to 6-1 at the top of the fourth and the Scarlet Knights added another run in the bottom of the inning to move within four (6-2) but it was not enough as DePaul rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth to earn the 11-2 victory.

Rutgers scored its second run of game one on a solo home run from senior Sarah Kalka (Moreno Valley, Calif.), her first of the season and 18th for her career.

In game two, Rutgers and DePaul were locked in a scoreless battle through the first three innings before the Blue Demons broke things open with five runs in the fourth.  DPU held the Scarlet Knights at bay for the next three and a half innings to pick up the 5-0 win.

Rutgers will return to action on Sunday, April 19 for a doubleheader against Notre Dame at 11:00 a.m.
