"We are happy with the game tonight, but never satisfied," said head coach Glenn Crooks. "I was happy for Caycie Gusman, as she missed all of the BIG EAST and NCAA Tournament last season. To see her get the first goal of the season was great."
The first goal was scored as Ashley Jones (Feasterville, Pa.) beat two defenders down the left side of the field, passing the ball to Gusman, who placed the ball in the upper right corner of the goal. Gusman's second of the night was unassisted, as a defender blocked a shot, which went spinning in front of the net. Gusman seized the opportunity, knocking it past the UMBC goalkeeper.
The third goal of the night came from redshirt junior Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) who was set up on a beautiful pass by junior Rheanne Sleiman (Vancouver, Canada), heading the ball just below the crossbar.
Junior Kelsey Dumont (Wrightstown, Pa.) scored the first goal of her career, on a pass by Gusman off a corner kick. Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) sent a rocket into the box, where Gusman tipped it to Dumont for the score.
Rutgers dominated the ball for most of the game, keeping it in the UMBC zone and not allowing the Retrievers to take a shot for thirty minutes.
Rutgers allowed UMBC to take only three shots all game. Senior captain Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) made one save on the night before coming out in the 58th minute. Redshirt freshman Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) also made a save on the night.
The Scarlet Knights return to Yurcak Field Friday, Aug. 28 to take on the Rams of Fordham. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
